Pakistan hockey’s much-awaited return to the FIH Pro League has not been enough to ease tensions between the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF), with the government body insisting on strict oversight of all financial matters.

Funding Dispute Between PSB and PHF

The PHF and PSB have been engaged in a prolonged dispute over the federation’s financial management, which many blame for hockey’s decline in the country. In a fresh move, the PSB has directed the PHF to submit a comprehensive plan for the FIH Pro League within three days before releasing Rs250 million in funds.

The board’s letter asked the PHF to provide details on travel arrangements, training schedules, logistics, and administrative planning. The directive came after the PHF requested Rs350 million for the campaign. Instead, the government capped its support at Rs250 million, instructing the federation to cover the shortfall through sponsorships and private funding.

Pakistan’s Return to the Global Stage

Pakistan secured its place in Season 7 of the FIH Pro League after New Zealand withdrew due to financial difficulties. However, the challenge ahead is significant. The tournament features top-tier teams including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, England, Germany, India, the Netherlands, and Spain, all of which represent the toughest competition in world hockey.

For Pakistan, the Pro League presents both a crucial opportunity and a major test—a chance to regain international relevance while navigating financial and organizational obstacles that continue to shadow the sport.

The Road Ahead

All eyes are now on the PHF and whether it will comply with the PSB’s directive. A coordinated and transparent approach could finally provide Pakistan hockey the stability it desperately needs after years of decline.
