Govt Formally Confirms UAE’s Visa Ban on Pakistanis

Additional Interior Secretary Salman Chaudhry confirmed on Thursday that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has stopped issuing visas to Pakistani passport holders. He shared the development during a meeting of the Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights.

Chaudhry warned that while the UAE and Saudi Arabia had “stopped short of imposing a ban on the Pakistani passport,” any formal ban would be difficult to reverse. He added that, at present, the UAE is only issuing visas to blue-passport and diplomatic-passport holders.

Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri, chairperson of the Senate committee, also verified the remarks, telling Dawn that the restrictions stem from concerns about some Pakistanis travelling to the UAE and engaging in criminal activities. She said that only a few visas had been issued recently “after much difficulty.”

The UAE remains one of Pakistan’s closest economic partners and a major source of remittances, with a large Pakistani expatriate workforce living in the country.
