Liverpool Eye Premier League Title Defence After Record-Breaking Summer Spending

Liverpool are entering the new Premier League season brimming with confidence after a remarkable summer transfer window that has set records for the club.

Under new head coach Arne Slot, the Reds clinched last season’s Premier League title with four games still to play, finishing 10 points ahead of Arsenal.

The club has already spent £269 million this summer to reinforce their squad. The biggest signing came in the form of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz for a club-record £100 million, with potential add-ons taking the fee to £116 million.

Other major arrivals include Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike for an initial £69 million, Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez for £40 million, and Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong for £29.5 million. Last year’s pre-agreed £25 million move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili has also been completed.

However, Liverpool are not the only contenders spending heavily. Several rivals have also made big moves in the market.

Arsenal (2nd Last Season – 10 Points Behind Liverpool)

Key Signings: Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting), Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad), Noni Madueke & Kepa Arrizabalaga (Chelsea), Christian Norgaard (Brentford), Cristhian Mosquera (Valencia)
Departures: Kieran Tierney, Jorginho, Thomas Partey, Takehiro Tomiyasu (all released)
Total Spending: £201 million

BBC Sport’s Alex Howell notes that this season carries huge expectations for the Gunners. Since their last trophy win in 2020, the club has been steadily building under Mikel Arteta, delivering consistent Champions League football and back-to-back title challenges.

Arsenal’s most notable signing, Viktor Gyokeres, is expected to spearhead their attack, with tactical tweaks focusing on quicker ball progression to maximise his strengths. Arteta’s changes may need time to fully click, but if successful, Arsenal could once again push Liverpool all the way.

Manchester City (3rd Last Season – 13 Points Behind)

Key Signings: Tijjani Reijnders (AC Milan), Rayan Cherki (Lyon), Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolves), James Trafford (Burnley), Sverre Nypan (Rosenborg)
Departures: Kevin De Bruyne (released), Kyle Walker (Burnley)
Total Spending: £154 million

According to Shamoon Hafez of BBC Sport, City are in an unusual position after failing to win a major trophy last season and suffering a shock early exit from the Club World Cup.

Manager Pep Guardiola has responded with significant reinforcements, particularly in midfield with Reijnders. While Liverpool and Arsenal take the spotlight as early favourites, City could benefit from flying under the radar and quietly building another title challenge.

Chelsea (4th Last Season – 15 Points Behind)

Key Signings: Liam Delap (Ipswich), Joao Pedro (Brighton), Jamie Gittens (Borussia Dortmund), Jorrel Hato (Ajax)
Pre-Agreed Arrivals Completed: Dario Essugo (Sporting), Estevao Willian (Palmeiras)
Departures: Kepa Arrizabalaga (Arsenal), Joao Felix (Al-Nassr), Djordje Petrovic (Bournemouth), Mathis Amougou (Strasbourg)
Total Spending: £249 million

BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella points out that Chelsea’s 3-0 Club World Cup final victory over PSG sent a clear message—they are once again contenders on the world stage.

Under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea have blended youth with elite-level quality, boasting stars like Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez, and Moises Caicedo, while adding fresh talent to handle the demands of Champions League football. Internally, the Blues have set a top-four finish as their goal, though some players believe they could win the league or Champions League as soon as next season.

Newcastle United (5th Last Season – 18 Points Behind)

Key Signings: Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest), Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton – loan)
Departures: Sean Longstaff (Leeds)
Pre-Agreed Exits Completed: Lloyd Kelly (Juventus)
Total Spending: £55 million

As per Ciaran Kelly from BBC Sport, Newcastle ended last season with momentum, securing a Champions League spot and silverware. However, this transfer window has been far from ideal.

The Magpies have missed out on several top targets, including Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, James Trafford, Liam Delap, and Dean Huijsen. Additionally, the departure of sporting director Paul Mitchell has caused further disruption.

While Alexander Isak’s future remains uncertain, Newcastle still have a competitive first XI capable of challenging the top teams, as shown in their Carabao Cup final performance against Liverpool. But to compete across all fronts, squad depth remains a pressing concern.

Can Anyone Stop Liverpool?

With Liverpool’s aggressive transfer strategy under Arne Slot, the reigning champions look determined to tighten their grip on the Premier League trophy. Arsenal seem best placed to challenge again, City are unpredictable but dangerous, Chelsea are quietly assembling a formidable side, and Newcastle’s success will hinge on late-window moves.
