The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has announced that its much-anticipated central bank digital currency (CBDC) project has officially entered the trial phase, marking a significant step in the country’s journey toward financial digitalization.
Expanding Financial Inclusion
According to SBP officials, the digital currency will allow people to make transactions without the need for physical cash or even a traditional bank account. The move is aimed at expanding financial inclusion, particularly for citizens who remain outside the conventional banking system.
The SBP is currently finalizing a comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure the digital currency operates smoothly, securely, and transparently. The rules and guidelines are expected to be completed before the project moves into a full-scale pilot launch.
Everyday Payments Through Mobile
The new CBDC system is being designed for daily use, allowing users to conduct quick and secure money transfers via their mobile devices.
How the digital wallet will work:
- Users will receive access through a mobile wallet app issued by the SBP or licensed financial institutions.
- Instant transactions will be made possible using QR codes.
- Registration will be linked to the user’s national identity card.
- Money can be transferred by simply entering the recipient’s phone number.
- Government payments, such as taxes and fees, will also be payable directly through the wallet.
This framework aims to create a safe, simple, and paperless alternative to Pakistan’s traditionally cash-heavy economy.
Global Context
Pakistan is not alone in experimenting with digital currencies. Globally, the momentum around CBDCs is growing:
- Nigeria has already rolled out a fully operational CBDC.
- China, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates are conducting large-scale pilot programs.
With the SBP now in the trial phase, Pakistan joins the ranks of countries actively exploring how digital currencies can transform financial transactions, boost efficiency, and reduce dependency on physical cash.
