Bangladesh has announced 500 new scholarships for outstanding Pakistani students, a move aimed at further strengthening bilateral ties and fostering academic collaboration between the two countries.
The announcement was made during a meeting in Lahore between Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Bangladesh’s Minister for Religious Affairs, Dr. Khalid Hussain. Also in attendance were PML-N President Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, H.E. MD Iqbal Hussain Khan.
Strengthening Educational and Regional Cooperation
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz welcomed the initiative, commending Bangladesh’s notable progress in sectors such as garments, microfinance, and women’s empowerment, describing them as critical drivers of social development.
She further expressed Punjab’s willingness to collaborate with Dhaka in green energy, flood management, and sustainable agriculture, highlighting the need for regional cooperation in tackling shared challenges.
Nawaz Sharif’s Remarks
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif recalled the historic contributions of national hero MM Alam with pride, noting the enduring bond between the people of Pakistan and Bangladesh.
He praised Bangladesh’s economic achievements and commitment to public welfare, underlining the importance of expanding cooperation across multiple fields.

Minister Dr. Khalid Hussain lauded the Nawaz family’s role in Pakistan’s politics, while appreciating Maryam Nawaz’s leadership and her focus on welfare-driven governance. He reaffirmed Dhaka’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties and supporting initiatives that enhance educational and cultural exchanges.
High Commissioner MD Iqbal Hussain Khan highlighted Nawaz Sharif’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s nuclear program, noting that Bangladesh’s younger generation continues to admire him for his contributions. He also praised Maryam Nawaz’s ongoing welfare projects in Punjab, calling them valuable steps toward improving people’s lives.

The 500 scholarships are being seen as a significant opportunity for Pakistani students to pursue higher education in Bangladesh, while also serving as a tool of soft diplomacy to bring the two nations closer.
Officials from both sides agreed that such initiatives would not only boost educational opportunities but also contribute to regional cooperation, mutual understanding, and long-term people-to-people linkages.
