The Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has announced plans to construct 46 kilometers of embankments on both sides of the River Ravi within the next three years, in an effort to strengthen flood protection measures for Lahore and its surrounding areas.
Rao Intizar Ali, Project In-Charge for River Training Works, disclosed the details during a media briefing on Monday. He noted that earlier embankments built over a 7-kilometer stretch had successfully shielded several villages in Sapphire Bay from recent floodwaters, underscoring the importance of expanding the project.
Punjab Government’s Support
Following the devastating impact of the latest floods, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz instructed RUDA to accelerate construction.
“We have decided to complete 30-foot embankments on both sides of the 46-kilometer stretch within three years. The riverbed itself will span one kilometer,” Rao Intizar explained.
He further added that the Punjab government will provide assistance in removing encroachments along the river to ensure uninterrupted progress on the project.
Addressing Delays
When questioned about delays in the project, Rao Intizar acknowledged that land acquisition issues had been the primary hurdle. However, he expressed optimism that with the chief minister directing all departments to coordinate closely with RUDA, the work will now move forward without significant setbacks.
Long-Term Flood Protection
The project is seen as a vital step in ensuring long-term flood resilience for Lahore and nearby settlements.
“We are optimistic that the embankments will be completed within the given timeline, providing reliable and lasting protection for the people of Lahore against future flooding,” Rao Intizar concluded.
