In a landmark decision, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs has officially granted the first-ever international ferry service license to Sea Keepers, authorizing the operator to run ferry routes between Pakistan, Iran, and countries within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

This historic approval was the result of a high-level meeting held by the Licensing Committee, which includes senior representatives from the Ministries of Maritime Affairs, Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Interior. The Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) and relevant port and shipping authorities also took part in the evaluation and approval process.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry praised the decision as a transformative step that aligns with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif’s vision and the objectives outlined in Pakistan’s National Maritime Policy. He emphasized that this move is set to significantly enhance regional connectivity, promote religious tourism, and stimulate economic activity via sea transport.

The newly licensed ferry service is expected to benefit hundreds of thousands of passengers annually, particularly pilgrims traveling to Iran and Iraq, as well as workers and tourists heading to GCC nations.

“The introduction of this ferry service will ease congestion on land borders and offer a cost-effective alternative to expensive air travel, especially for members of the Pakistani diaspora and religious travelers,” the minister highlighted.

The initial phase of operations will launch from Karachi and Gwadar ports, utilizing modern ferry vessels outfitted with essential onboard facilities to ensure safe, reliable, and budget-friendly travel. Future expansion of port calls and routes will be planned in line with bilateral agreements and market demand, the minister added.

This initiative is part of Pakistan’s long-term strategy to develop its blue economy, improve trade logistics, and promote maritime tourism. It reflects a renewed national commitment to sustainable infrastructure for regional sea-based transport.
