The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has firmly rejected recent media speculation suggesting that changes were under consideration regarding the leadership of the national men’s team in the Test and One-Day International (ODI) formats.
PCB’s Official Statement
In an official statement released on Monday, the PCB clarified that there is no plan to replace Mohammad Rizwan as ODI captain and no move to remove Shan Masood from the Test captaincy.
The clarification came after widespread reports over the weekend hinted at possible changes, with speculation that Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan’s current T20I captain, might be handed ODI leadership, while Saud Shakeel was rumored to be considered as a potential Test captain.
Performance Concerns Sparked Rumors
Pakistan’s mixed performances in recent series have fueled discussions in local media about leadership reshuffles. Many analysts suggested that the PCB might be preparing to act, citing past patterns of quick captaincy switches in response to team form.
However, the PCB emphasized that the matter has not been discussed in any selection committee meetings. Yet, the wording of the statement—stressing that the issue has not been discussed “yet”—has left some observers cautious, recalling similar denials issued in the past. For instance, before head coach Jason Gillespie’s eventual departure, the board had initially denied reports of his exit.
Current Leadership Remains
For now, Shan Masood will continue leading Pakistan in Test cricket, while Mohammad Rizwan retains charge of the ODI side, as the team prepares for its upcoming international commitments.
