Air Quality Forecast System

Punjab has rolled out the country’s first advanced air quality forecasting system, a project initiated under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.

How the System Works

The system, designed using modern scientific models similar to “Windy” and “Euro”, integrates real-time air monitoring with predictive analytics. This allows authorities to track air pollution levels alongside weather patterns with far greater accuracy than before.

Currently, data is being collected from 41 operational air quality monitoring stations, with plans to expand the network to 100 stations across the province. The insights generated will directly support:

  • Public health advisories for vulnerable groups,

  • Policy decisions on smog and pollution control, and

  • Preventive measures to reduce hazardous exposure during peak smog season.

Government’s Focus

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb emphasized the government’s multipronged approach to tackling air pollution. Measures include:

  • Reducing vehicular and industrial emissions,

  • Strict action against crop residue burning, and

  • Urging citizens, particularly children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, to take protective steps during high-smog periods.

Officials say the system marks a milestone in Punjab’s environmental strategy, giving policymakers and the public timely information to mitigate the health risks of rising air pollution.
