Pakistan has taken a significant step toward advancing its technological future with the launch of the Uraan AI Techathon 1.0 in Islamabad. The event, aimed at empowering young talent to drive the country’s digital revolution, marks a milestone in transitioning Pakistan toward a knowledge-based economy.
Held under the broader vision of Uraan Pakistan’s national transformation initiative, the Techathon—organized by the Press Information Department (PID)—seeks to bring together students, developers, entrepreneurs, and innovators from across the country. By harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI), participants will work on solutions for real-world challenges, reinforcing Pakistan’s journey into the digital age.
A Call to Action for Pakistan’s Youth
Addressing the event, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal described the initiative as a “national call to action,” highlighting the government’s commitment to engaging youth and professionals alike.
“The Techathon aims to enable the youth and professionals of Pakistan to address practical challenges with the help of AI, build national capability in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and enhance Pakistan’s global presence in emerging technologies,”
Iqbal stated.
He emphasized that the project was not just a competition but a platform for collaboration and innovation, aligning with the government’s long-term vision for sustainable development through technology.
Linked to Pakistan’s First National AI Policy
The launch comes shortly after the government unveiled Pakistan’s first-ever National Artificial Intelligence Policy, which outlines plans to:
- Train one million individuals in AI and related fields.
- Promote the ethical use of AI while safeguarding privacy and human rights.
- Develop a secure digital infrastructure to support AI adoption.
- Foster global partnerships in AI research and innovation.
At the event, the planning minister also announced a dedicated online portal for Techathon participants, designed to centralize registrations, resources, and communications. The platform, he said, will be inclusive and accessible, particularly for students and innovators in remote and underserved areas.
AI as the Present, Not the Future
Highlighting the transformative role of AI, Iqbal underscored its impact across multiple sectors:
“AI is no longer the future but the present. Decisions shaping economies today are increasingly driven by algorithms. Pakistan will not remain a spectator in the AI revolution but will emerge as a rising leader.”
He pointed to the vast potential of AI in healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance, adding that the government is investing in talent development, mentorship programs, and Centers of Excellence to position AI as a key driver of economic growth.
Toward a Trillion-Dollar Economy
Looking ahead, the planning minister expressed optimism about Pakistan’s economic future:
“Through initiatives like the Uraan AI Techathon 1.0, we are not only nurturing innovation but also preparing Pakistan to move toward a trillion-dollar economy by 2035.”
He encouraged young innovators to embrace technology, showcase their talent on the global stage, and become catalysts for change in the digital transformation of Pakistan.
