Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif met with Honda Motor Company’s Executive Vice President Noriya Kayahara during her visit to the company’s headquarters in Japan, where both sides held talks on strengthening strategic cooperation in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.
Focus on Electric Vehicles and Skill Development
The discussions centered on local production and assembly of electric vehicles, with both parties agreeing to benefit from Japan’s — and Honda’s — extensive experience to enhance youth training in the auto sector.
Maryam Nawaz briefed Honda executives on Punjab’s EV initiatives, including the establishment of a dedicated depot for 1,500 electric buses in partnership with the private sector. She highlighted that Punjab had significant potential to emerge as one of the largest EV markets in South Asia.
“Punjab provides excellent investment opportunities. It is an ideal hub for assembling and manufacturing electric vehicles, with an abundant pool of skilled labor,” she emphasized.
Infrastructure and Investment Opportunities
The Chief Minister noted that her government aims to create a battery charging infrastructure for electric cars and bikes across urban and semi-urban centers of the province.
She further expressed Punjab’s willingness to collaborate with Honda in setting up a state-of-the-art vehicle testing laboratory to enhance safety standards and reduce road accidents.
Maryam underscored that Punjab is offering attractive incentives for foreign investors, ensuring that international companies like Honda could benefit from the province’s growing industrial base and market demand.
Broader Transport Vision
Beyond electric vehicles, the Punjab government is working on major transport projects to modernize connectivity and promote tourism.
- A high-speed train project is planned between Lahore and Rawalpindi.
- A Tourist Glass Train service will run from Rawalpindi to Murree, aimed at boosting tourism and creating new recreational opportunities.
“Punjab is entering a new era of development through sustainable transport initiatives,” she added.

Honda’s Executive Vice President Noriya Kayahara warmly welcomed Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and praised her visionary approach toward sustainable growth, industrial expansion, and youth empowerment.
He lauded her government’s initiatives in promoting clean transportation and assured Honda’s interest in exploring potential partnerships in Punjab.
