Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a significant oil and gas discovery at its Dhok Sultan-03 well located in District Attock, Punjab Province.

This is the second major find in the Dhok Sultan Block (3371-15) by PPL, which holds a 75% working interest in the block. The remaining 25% stake is owned by its joint venture partner, Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL).

Drilling Details

The Dhok Sultan-03 well was spudded on January 18, 2025 and drilled to a depth of 5,815 meters to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of the Patala and Lockhart formations.

Testing Results

Extensive testing delivered promising outcomes:

  • At a 32/64″ choke, the well flowed 1,469 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 2.56 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of gas at a wellhead flowing pressure (WHFP) of 1,147 psig.
  • At a 48/64″ choke, output rose to 2,113 BOPD and 4.13 MMscfd of gas with a WHFP of 813 psig.

Strategic Significance

PPL emphasized that the discovery highlights the untapped hydrocarbon potential of the Potwar-Kohat sub-basin, which can be unlocked with advanced technologies in prospect evaluation and well drilling.

The company stated that the new find will:

  • Add fresh hydrocarbon reserves to Pakistan’s portfolio.
  • Reduce reliance on imported oil and gas, thereby saving crucial foreign exchange.
  • Strengthen the country’s indigenous energy production capacity.

A Boost for Domestic Energy Security

Energy experts have hailed the discovery as a major breakthrough that will help bolster Pakistan’s upstream exploration efforts and enhance domestic production capabilities.

Industry analysts note that consistent discoveries like Dhok Sultan are essential to bridging the widening energy gap, stabilizing supply, and cutting down import bills amid volatile global fuel prices.
