E10 Shinkansen bullet train

Japan has officially introduced its next-generation bullet train, the E10 Shinkansen, which is scheduled to launch on a major Tokyo route by 2030. Designed with a cherry blossom-inspired livery by UK-based consultancy Tangerine, the train brings together Japanese tradition and modern global design.

The new model will gradually replace the older E2 and E5 trains on the busy Tohoku Shinkansen line, a route that links Tokyo with northeastern Japan. This line carries millions of passengers annually and runs through some of the country’s most picturesque landscapes, from towering mountains to coastal regions.

UK Design Meets Japanese Innovation

For the first time in history, JR East has collaborated with a non-Japanese design partner for its iconic fleet. The London-based firm Tangerine has developed both the external livery and interior designs of the E10.

The train’s exterior features a sakura blossom-inspired green and pink color scheme, reflecting the forests and coastlines along its journey. The sleek design is not only aesthetic but also engineered to maintain aerodynamic efficiency — an essential factor for high-speed rail.

Inside, the E10 Shinkansen prioritizes passenger comfort. Lighting systems are designed with indirect wash lights to create a calming environment. Different passenger classes will have unique layouts, but all will feature consistent fabrics and soft textures that combine elegance with functionality.

A New Standard for Rail Travel

Matt Round, Chief Creative Officer at Tangerine, highlighted the project’s significance:

“The E10 Shinkansen represents a milestone in UK-Japan collaboration within the rail sector, setting new benchmarks for hospitality-focused design and sustainable travel. With its blend of Japanese spirit and user-centric design, the E10 Shinkansen is poised to redefine high-speed rail travel for decades to come.”

This partnership reflects JR East’s vision of integrating global expertise while preserving the uniquely Japanese identity of the Shinkansen.

Competing with Air Travel

As low-cost airlines gain popularity, Japan’s rail operators are working to make high-speed rail more attractive for both domestic and international passengers. By focusing on design, comfort, and sustainability, the E10 project aims to strengthen the competitive edge of rail travel.

The Tohoku Shinkansen, which first opened in 1982, currently reaches speeds of up to 320 km/h and connects Tokyo with major cities like Sendai and Morioka. This line not only serves business travelers but also boosts tourism to regions celebrated for natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The E10 Shinkansen is now entering the design implementation stage, with detailed engineering and testing scheduled throughout the decade before its official passenger launch in 2030.
