Japanese convenience store chain Ministop has suspended sales of its popular rice balls (onigiri) and other freshly prepared deli items at 1,600 outlets nationwide after discovering staff had falsified expiry dates.

The company revealed that employees at 23 stores, including branches in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, engaged in misconduct by delaying the placement of expiry labels or relabeling food with false dates after the items had already been displayed.

Emergency Investigation Launched

Ministop initially paused sales of onigiri on 9 August, but on Monday expanded the suspension to include other deli products while conducting an “emergency investigation.”

In a public statement, the company apologized:

“We sincerely apologise for the significant inconvenience caused to our customers who have supported Ministop’s handmade onigiri and handmade bento boxes.”

The chain emphasized that no health-related complaints have been reported so far.

Onigiri: A Staple of Japanese Daily Life

Convenience stores, or konbini, are a cornerstone of Japanese urban life, offering quick meals, groceries, and services for busy commuters.

Among the most popular items is onigiri – rice balls wrapped in nori (seaweed) and filled with tuna, cod roe, or other proteins. Known for their portability and affordability, they remain a go-to option for millions of Japanese workers and students.

Ministop, which operates over 1,800 stores across Japan, distinguishes itself from larger rivals by focusing on fresh, handmade meals prepared on site. The expiry date scandal strikes at the core of this reputation.

Consumer Trust at Risk

Industry analysts warn the scandal could damage consumer trust in Ministop’s brand, particularly since food safety is a highly sensitive issue in Japan.

“Freshness and transparency are critical in Japan’s convenience food market. Even minor lapses can have long-term reputational consequences,” said a Tokyo-based retail consultant.

Ministop has pledged stricter monitoring and compliance checks to restore confidence among its loyal customer base.
