Gemini AI Transforms Google Maps into an Intelligent Driving Assistant

Google is integrating its Gemini AI assistant into Google Maps to provide a fully voice-based navigation experience. The company describes this as a “hands-free, conversational driving experience,” allowing users to interact with Maps much like they would with a knowledgeable passenger.

With Gemini, users can issue complex, multi-step voice commands while driving. The AI will also allow for actions such as adding events to Google Calendar and reporting traffic disruptions, all without needing to touch the screen. This feature will begin rolling out on both Android and iOS in the coming weeks.

Landmark-Based Instructions

Directions in Google Maps are also being enhanced with landmark-based instructions. Instead of just street names or distances, users might now hear phrases like “turn right after the Thai Siam restaurant.” These landmarks will be visible on the map as drivers approach them. This upgrade is currently rolling out to Android and iOS users in the US.

Proactive Traffic Alerts

Even if users are not actively navigating, Google Maps will start providing alerts for standstill traffic and other road disruptions ahead. This change, aimed at keeping users informed while commuting, is also rolling out now in the US for Android devices.

Google is expanding its visual search tools within Maps. By tapping the camera icon in the search bar, users can hold up their phone to identify places in view, such as restaurants, cafes, or landmarks. Once identified, users can tap the microphone to ask questions about each location.

According to Google, this feature leverages both Gemini’s conversational abilities and the platform’s location data. The new Lens tool will begin rolling out gradually later this month on Android and iOS in the US.
