Arizona State University

In a historic development for Pakistan’s education sector, Arizona State University (ASU)—one of the top-ranked public universities in the United States—is officially partnering with Pakistan to launch the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Lahore. This will mark the first-ever physical presence of an American university in Pakistan, aiming to offer globally competitive education while nurturing local talent.

Partnership and Launch Details

Formal Agreement Signed

The collaboration was formally signed in April 2025 at ASU’s main campus in Tempe, Arizona. This public-private initiative is the result of two years of groundwork and negotiation between ASU and the NIT leadership in Pakistan.

Campus and Launch Timeline

The new campus is located near DHA Phase 7 in Lahore and is scheduled to open its doors in October 2025 for the Fall semester. The charter for NIT was officially issued in January 2025, providing it with full authority to operate as an independent degree-awarding institution.

Academic Focus and Curriculum

Programs Offered

NIT will launch with two core academic divisions:

  • School of Management Sciences
  • School of Data Sciences & Information Technology

These departments are designed to deliver a rigorous, American-style curriculum adapted to the Pakistani context and market needs.

Dual Degree Opportunities

Students enrolling in NIT will have the option to graduate with dual degrees—one from NIT and another from Arizona State University—offering both local and international academic credentials.

International Network and Exchange Opportunities

ASU-Cintana Alliance

NIT’s affiliation with ASU extends beyond curriculum. As a member of the ASU-Cintana Alliance, students will gain access to more than 30 global institutions, allowing for student exchange programs, semester-abroad opportunities, and academic collaboration with campuses in Washington D.C., California, and beyond.

Innovation and Global Learning

ASU will also provide technological, research, and faculty development support to NIT, enabling advanced learning platforms and an innovative academic culture comparable to international standards.

Visionary Leadership and Strategic Objectives

Founding Team

The establishment of NIT is spearheaded by Shahzeb Awan, a legal expert from the University of London, and Jahanzeb Burana, a Harvard MBA and experienced education entrepreneur. Their vision is to combine global academic excellence with local relevance.

University Governance

Dr. Faisal Bari, a prominent educationist and academic, has been appointed as Vice Chancellor. He is tasked with leading the university’s academic vision, hiring world-class faculty, and setting a precedent for quality assurance in higher education.

Government and National Impact

Endorsement by Prime Minister

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has personally endorsed the initiative, calling it a “game-changer for Pakistani youth.” He emphasized the importance of giving local students access to world-class education without the financial and logistical burden of studying abroad.

National Development Goals

This partnership aligns with Pakistan’s broader goals to modernize its education sector, enhance employability, and reduce the country’s reliance on foreign education systems. It also aims to strengthen the economy by retaining intellectual capital within the country.

Facilities and Infrastructure

The NIT campus is being developed with state-of-the-art facilities, including smart classrooms, data labs, a digital library, innovation hubs, and on-campus career development centers. The goal is to provide an immersive academic experience consistent with global standards while keeping tuition accessible to high-achieving students across Pakistan.
